ACKS: The Liberation of Geoff

Bandits and Lizardmen, Living Together, Mass Hysteria!

Entering the temple, the party found the lair of the bandits. The bandits were prepared though, and a huge battle erupted. The party was triumphant. Chasing down one of the leaders and a mage, they found the mage’s secret lair. Thinking they had him cornered, the searched for him but didn’t find him.

Examining the mage’s spellbook, Lordinel did not notice the explosive runes on it’s inside cover. The runes blew his arms off but leaving him alive. The explosion also put out one of Schala’s eyes, and knocked teeth out of Jefe’s mouth.

The Swamp of ACKSness

The party finally managed to get out of the swamp with their treasure. But Vexeria was knocked unconcious and her body dragged away by lizardmen. Upon returning to camp, Gretel Gravelgrinder left the party. The group, using a map Gretel made, was able to find their way back to the temple.

The party unsuccessfully tried to exit the swamp with no guide. They fought ghouls, giant rat monsters, and some other stuff, then some trolls wrecked their boat and they ended up back at the temple.

ACKS Not What Lizardmen Can Do For You...

After the battle, the party resumed travel to Waycombe. They encountered Bartolomo Trume, the leader of the Duke’s expedition to defeat the bandits. He said he was the only survivor of the unit. For some reason, the party didn’t trust him, and wouldn’t give him a horse or any other help in getting back to the Duke’s castle.

The party reached the city of Waycombe and found it abandoned except for the innkeeper, who said he was leaving as soon as he’d finished packing. He said the bandit raids had made everyone abandon town. There were also rumors of a dragon about. He said if they were looking for someone to lead them through the swamp, crazy dude Stephen Mataiss was who they should find.

So the party found Stephen in his hut on the edge of the swamp, and between crazy talk about the return of Sakatha, he agreed to lead them into the swamp on his skiffs.

After three days of travel the party reached a mud hill with stairs leading to a raised platform with columns. There they fought some bandits and entered the temple. Water weirds threatened to drown them, but they discovered the secret to defeating them. Then Aulicus the black dragon appeared through a secret door. After blasting his acid only once, the party cut him down with no mercy.

Taking Aulicus’s treasure, the party decided to retreat to Waycombe for now.

ACKS Bloody Fray

The party headed out from the Count’s castle to the site of the bandit attacks near the village of Waycombe. At the Robin’s Breast Inn, the party met a minstrel named Pluck Six-String who sang a song about a local legend.

The locals were upset by this and left the tavern.

The next day the party marched to a bridge with their mercenaries and were attacked by 210 lizardmen. The party bravely dove into the fray, defeating 60 single handedly before their cavalry mopped up the rest with nary a casualty.

The lizardmen would not shut about how great their king Sakatha is.

ACKSey Road

After Harbet and Symes failed to shakedown Gibbs, but did succeed in stealing from him and burning his store down, and Vexeria paying to have Schala turned back to flesh, the party set out for Niole Dra.

The only eventful happening on the journey was the sighting of a dragon that Nodnarb’s Augury spell implied was named Aulicus.

In Niole Dra, the party met with Vindle Morgenar, an archmage and collector of magical weapons. They traded the two-handed sword they’d found in the sewers of Istvin for 3 less powerful weapons.

Next, the party commenced to hire an army of mercenaries: seven 15 man units of cavalry including three units of light cav, two of medium, and two units of horse archers.

Hearing rumors from their mercenaries that there was a bandit problem in the north, they travelled to the city of Eor to meet the Count of Eor, John Brunis. The Count approved of the party and had them meet with the merchants who had been robbed by these bandits. During the meeting an evil cleric in disguise as a cleric of the Shield Maiden cast a Flame Strike on the count and the party. There was a short fight, but the cleric escaped. Vowing revenge, the party agreed to destroy the bandits and whatever evil was behind them.

Drow Do You Do?

After fighting the Skull Lord, half the party decides to head back to the surface, leaving Harbet, Bock, Jefe, Vexeria, and their henchmen in the sewer. They killed the drow prisoners. Really wanting to know what was up with that giant pile of probably-trapped treasure, they prodded it with a 10ft pole, knocking some coins off the pressure plate. This caused a giant stone wall to block the stairway and activate two more bone golems. Symes went down during the fight, severely injuring his leg.

Going back to the statue room, Bock tried to open the main door. But the statue asked him “Are you prepared to make the sacrifice?” Not knowing what that meant, but not liking the sound of it, Bock said, “No.” Lamenting the lack of drow prisoners to use in the statue room and low on spells and hit points, the party decided to camp in the crypts for several days to recuperate. Luckily, they were well provisioned.

With everyone healed except for Symes, who needed more rest to regain use of his leg, the party decided to continue exploring to see if they could find a way out. Using the statue room to open a southern door, the party found a room with two huge pools of sewage. Crossing a bridge between the pools, they were attacked by otyughs, of course. And then from across the room appeared several drow who waited to see what would happen with the fight. When it appeared the PCs would win, the drow attacked.

Bock, deciding he wasn’t going out like that, attempted to parlay with the drow, which stopped the fight. The drow captain was summoned. The drow wanted access to the surface, but couldn’t get through the magically locked doors from their side. The PC’s wanted the drow’s help opening the door to the surface. When the drow said they had no idea how the door worked, the PC’s bolted. The captain sent several drow and bugbears after the PCs. The party let a couple of bugbears through the doors, then slammed it shut. They took the bugbears prisoner and tricked them into the statue room, making one a sacrifice that opened the door to the surface. They took the substantial treasure and triumphantly returned to the surface.

What can Symes find out about Gibbs? Symes wants to feel it out for several approaches to gaining the sword (keep in mind while this is going on Symes is being cautious about the speed that Gibbs wants to be rid of this artifact):

Is Gibbs a gambler? Confident in his gambling abilities, Symes might try to get it cheaper through a wager.
Is Gibbs known for evil things? (justifying that Symes can just slaughter him – although Symes is unaligned so for a magic sword he may not care…)
Is Symes or Harbet aware if it is stolen? This doesn’t necessarily prevent Symes from wanting it just making sure he knows who he’d want to see it…
Symes is interested in if Gibbs ever traffics in other magic items (Symes really wants a magic bow)

PS – Symes doesn’t have 6000, I’ll have to check but Harbet may be able to back him up (as a loan)

Also if Gibbs moves the sword before Symes has a chance to make a play for it, Symes will want to try to track where that sword goes and entertain the possibility of taking the 6000gp from Gibbs or taking the sword from the new owner. After all, Symes IS a “Slayer” now.

Symes has a contact, Weasel, in the Blackblades assassin guild he asks about Gibbs. Weasel says Gibbs works as a fence for the Calico Cats. He’s as trustworthy as any fence, so not very. For information beyond that, Symes will need to make a Hear Noise roll. And since that’s not a class skill for an assassin, he needs an 18+.

Ok, I will still check the combined coffers of Symes and Harbet tonight, but do any of our party members have enough knowledge (common knowledge) to know that Symes would be getting screwed out of this deal?

my assumptions I’d like confirmed through common knowledge of the party:
- its not cursed, since many cursed items would not be able to be sold by someone who didn’t place the curse on the item itself
- its a +1 sword based on its value
- +1 sword has a base value of 5000 so he would be getting a raw deal if he paid more than that
- there is no owner that would come back to bite Symes for openly owning a fenced item since it is over the +1 base price

Oh, I misread that then. I was under the assumption that you sell items for x2 base cost if you make them because they don’t have a “dubious background” and for base cost if you find them, steal them, etc. And I thought the base cost was 5000gp based on the Magic Item creation table on pg 118.

Are you sure you aren’t inflating the price with the added cost of commissioning the item?
Total cost = (Base price + precious materials + special components) + completion price
completion price = 7000gp/month or 2x base cost (higher of the 2)

The tricky thing is this is all “what adventurers can do.” What you know is that there’s a sword for 6000gp. You’re not sure of the sword’s history or origin.

An adventurer may have sold it to the fence for the 5000gp, and now the fence is marking it up 1000gp for his margin. Or any other of a number of reasons.

Do Symes and Harbet want to make an appointment to meet Gibbs? Do they want to take anyone else along with?

Ok, Jefe offered to do some negotiating (this could change the price to 5400 or 6600 depending on Gibbs’ bargaining proficiency and Jefe’s roll). Symes and Harbet together only have 5679. So I am looking at doing 2 things:
-borrowing about 1k from a party member, waiting on Vexaria to agree first before going on to any others
-trying to get Gibbs to wager some kind of gambling bet and hopefully not make the price even worse

If I can’t get a party member to give me that kind of cash, are the Calico Cats into loan sharking?

Jefe and/or Gretel offered to do a streetwise check (hear noise) to help me determine its previous ownership. I still want to buy it if its stolen, but I want to know who to avoid. I also want to know if it is leverage I can use to negotiate a better price (or for Jefe to use). Known stolen items should probably be able to get a cheaper price than the normal 10% bonus of Bargaining.

You guys know what I’m talkin’ about,” and opens a safe. He takes out a sword wrapped in silk and lays it on a table in front of you. With the flourish of a showman, he reveals the sword in its scabbard. “Behold! Agrivax the Doomblade! Leastwise, that’s what it says on the scabbard.” And he points out some runes.

Sewer? I Barely Know Her!"

Following Mario the sewer worker into the unfortunately CHUDless sewers, the party found a blood splatter on the tunnel floor that clued them to the existence of a secret door. The door revealed a staircase that led far beneath the sewers of Istvin. They found themselves in an ancient catacomb, the walls covered in bones from top to bottom.

Investigating, they found a pile of treasure on a pressure plate. Above the treasure was a frescoe in ancient style depicting the founding of the city. Written in an ancient form of common is the following:

_ We are the fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters of Istvin. We built this city (On Rock & Roll) to last 10,000 years. These are our spoils. If you are worthy, they are yours. If you are not, you will join us._

The party ignored the schmuck bait and continued to the next room. In this room was a statue of a woman with her arm outstretched. at the other end of the room were two statues of dire wolves with their arms outstretched. The party discovered that to open any doors one needs to place their arms in the wolves mouth’s which then clamp down preventing escape, name the door, and the statue shoots a magic missile at the trapped person, opening the door.

Exploring further, the party fought bone golems that emerged from the skeleton covered walls. They then found five sarcophagi that they immediately tried to loot, releasing the wights inside. Sterling and Vexeria lost levels, but the wights were defeated and their treasure looted.

Opening another door, the party revealed a large room full of zombies and a three-skulled creature that seemed to be in command of them. Four drow were chained to pillars in the room, almost dead from torture. With three clerics in the party, the zombies and skull lord were defeated.

Werewolf? Therewolf!

The party heard several rumors, but decided follow up on one about Baron Ruekesh. It is rumored that he is wooing the Marchioness Resbin Dren Emondavsince her husband, Marquis Querchard, has been missing for months. Not liking the sound of a werewolf cannibal being the nominal ruler of Sterich, the party travelled to Istvin. They encountered a band of wereboars and their dire boar friends and defeated them. After snooping around town for a few days, the party heard a rumor from a sewer worker that he claims to be able to hear the screams of the missing Marquis in a certain part of the sewers. When they go back to find him, the worker has gone missing as well. They talk to his brother and he points the party to the part of the sewer his brother worked in.
